Fertilizing and Weed Control

We use premium LESCO fertilizers in our five-step fertilization program.

Round One – Crabgrass Preemergent on Fertilizer, Between March and May

(Dimension .10%, 19-0-6 Fertilizer, 30% PPSCU)

This is an early spring application that helps prevent the establishment of crabgrass in turf. We use soil temperatures to plan for timely applications prior to crabgrass germination. By most indications, crabgrass will not germinate until soil temperatures reach 55° F for at least three consecutive days.

Round Two – Fertilization with Broadleaf Weed Control, Between May and June

(21-0-12 Weed and Feed with PolyVex, 50% PPSCU, 4% FE)

When broadleaf weeds pop up in the spring, we apply this superior weed and feed to lawns. It makes sure weeds don’t have a chance to get a foothold in your lawn.

Round Three – Summer Turf Fertilization Between June and July

(32-0-10 Turf Fertilizer, 75% PPSCU, 2% FE)

Proper fertilization is necessary for optimal turf growth and health. Our third round of applications gives your lawn an ample supply of nitrogen to keep it healthy during the summer months.

Round Four – Fertilization with Broadleaf Weed Control, Applied Between September and October

(Momentum 21-0-12 Weed and Feed with PolyVex, 50% PPSCU, 4% FE)

For a less stressful spring, be sure to address potential weed problems at this time. Weeds that are not controlled at this time of year are the first weeds to pop up in the spring!

Round Five – Fall Turf Fertilization, Between October and November

(32-0-10 Turf Winterizer with Only 30% PPSCU, 2% FE)

For the fifth application, we use a slow-release product that provides for faster nutrient absorption before the winter season. This is the most important fertilization for your turf! This application encourages strong root development during the fall. It also helps turn your turf green first thing in the spring!

How Fertilizer Feeds Turf

The main course for turf is the fertilizer's formula of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N – P – K). However, there's also a variety of secondary micronutrients needed to keep turf healthy and growing, including calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, manganese, zinc, copper and chlorine.

Granular fertilizers can contain a blend of nutrient particles, as in LESCO Poly Plus. Or, each homogenous particle can be made up of all the nutrients, as in LESCO NOVEX. LESCO PolyVex uses both approaches. It contains a blend of different nutrient particles and individual, homogenous nutrient particles.

Nutrient Release

The nutrients in the fertilizer are made accessible to the plant throughout a number of natural release mechanisms, including microbial action, soil temperature, osmosis, hydrolysis and physical breakdown. As the structure of the fertilizer pellet melts away, minerals are released into the soil and absorbed by the plant.

PolyVex

PolyVex provides the perfect blend of slow-release technologies. It combines the time-tested Poly Plus sulfur-coated urea fertilizer with the ground-breaking technology of NOVEX. NOVEX is a homogenous blend of quick-acting and slow-release nutrients. With PolyVex, you get a quick, initial green-up, a longer release of nutrients and consistent feeding for all conditions – from extremely hot and dry to extremely cool and moist, and everything in between. PolyVex is recommended for use with most turf and landscape ornamentals. Commercial and residential formulations are available for landscapes, golf courses and athletic fields.

  • Quick and consistent greening
  • Broad spectrum
  • Lower surge growth
  • Low risk of burn
  • Enhanced stress tolerance
  • Improved nutrient efficiencies

The PolyVex Difference

  • Multiple release mechanisms for better nutrient feeding, even during stress conditions
  • Broad-spectrum fertilizer that works with most species of turf, shrubs, trees and flowers
  • Particles maintain structure during handling and distribution, resulting in less waste
  • Predictable nitrogen release, even in stress conditions
  • Patented technology ensures better nutrient feeding and reduces loss due to leaching and volatilization
  • Uniform turf growth over time means less mowing, reduced thatch buildup and fewer pest problems
  • Uniformly blended for easier spreading and maximum coverage
  • Low sale index reduces the risk of burn, even in adverse conditions

Poly Plus Broad-Spectrum Fertilizer

Poly Plus is based upon the industry’s standard, sulfur-coated urea technology. This gives it a controlled release of nitrogen. However, patent-pending Poly Plus features a unique coating process. This coating enables it to more effectively deliver nutrients under the widest variety of conditions.

Unlike other sulfur-coated urea fertilizers, Poly Plus is recommended for use with turf and ornamentals during all growing seasons and in varying soil and temperature conditions. LESCO has engineered specific Poly Plus formulations for residential and commercial landscapes, golf courses and athletic fields – in all geographical climates.

How Poly Plus Provides Consistent Healthy, Green Growth

Each Poly Plus particle features a unique Poly Plus coating technology built around a sulfur-coated urea base. The Poly Plus coating slows down nutrient release and evens out the feeding and growth cycle of the turf.

As the outer coating breaks down, nutrients are slowly released for as many as 12-16 weeks, in varying soil conditions and growing seasons.

The Poly Plus Difference

  • Controlled nutrient release for consistent growth, resulting in decreased mowing frequency and clippings
  • Uniform release maximizes nutrient uptake efficiency and minimizes fertilizer loss due to leaching and volatilization
  • Harder, more durable coating resists breakage during handling and application
  • Designed for broad-spectrum usage
  • Works with most species of turf, shrubs, trees and flowers
  • Free-flowing product is easier to handle and apply
  • Multiple formulations are available: Poly Plus coated urea, Poly Plus coated potassium sulfate and Poly Plus coated diamonium phosphate
  • Multiple ratios are available: high nitrogen, high potassium and balanced nitrogen and potassium ratios
  • Multiple particle sizes are available: ELITE®, mini and standard
  • Can be combined with LESCO chemical-control products for superior feeding and control of weeds, diseases and pests

Feast or Famine Feeding

The Feast

Unlike LESCO fertilizers, many ordinary fertilizers break down too quickly. This breakdown releases an overabundance of nutrients that result in a surge of growth and plant weakness. During the feast, plants are more susceptible to disease. Likewise, in hot, humid weather, turf will appear burned. Besides damaging the turf, overfeeding plants requires more frequent mowing.

The Famine

Famine occurs when nutrients are withheld or unavailable. The starved turf becomes weak and the color is poor. However, by the time turf color fades, the plant structure has already been damaged from a lack of nutrients.

The LESCO Fertilizer Zone

LESCO has spent the last forty-plus years developing fertilizers that feed on a slow, continual basis. With LESCO, there’s no feast or famine. Your turf is greener, healthier and more vigorous all season long, year after year.

When turf is subjected to feast or famine conditions, it presents a challenge. During the feast, plant growth surges, weakening turf and leaving it vulnerable to disease. The famine starves turf, causing poor color, slow growth and overall weakness.

LESCO fertilizers solve the problems of feast and famine conditions by releasing nutrients slowly and consistently over a longer period of time. As a result, turf is healthier, stronger and more disease tolerant. Grass is greener and thicker with a more consistent growing pattern.
